Tour Description

Daily Statistics:

  • Distance traveled: 26 km
  • Highest altitude: 5,150 meters above sea level
  • Lowest altitude: 3,300 meters above sea level
  • Route: Cusco – Ausangate – Red Valley
  • Difficulty: Moderate

The Rainbow Mountain 2 day treks covers the Ausangate region, passing through glaciers, lagoons, and open terrain with peaks above 6,300 meters. Both days run at high elevation and the pace adapts to what the terrain demands. Sections shift between rocky ground and wider open areas as the route moves along. Daily distance is split to keep things physically reasonable at this height.

Overnight camping divides the trip into two days at fixed stops on the trail. Rainbow Mountain and Red Valley are the two main points, where mineral-rich soils form the layered colors the zone is recognized for. A cook handles meals on site and horses carry most of the luggage.

Trails cut through polylepis forests and open grasslands with guides present throughout. Breaks are distributed across both days without affecting the general rhythm. Safety and orientation are under guide supervision at every point. Machu Picchu Peru Trek offers this route for those looking to get into the high Andes.

 Itinerary

Day 1Cusco – Alqatari – Ausangate Range – Ananta Camp

We will start early with a 4:00 am pickup from our hotel in Cusco. We will travel approximately 3 hours (185 km / 115 mi) by private vehicle to Alqatari. There, we will enjoy a hot breakfast prepared by our professional cook.
After breakfast, we will begin the rainbow mountain 2 day treks, walking through high Andean plains, local homes, and grazing areas for llamas and alpacas. We will ascend gradually toward Pucacocha Pass, enjoying open views of Ausangate Glacier, the highest peak in Cusco at 6,370 m (20,906 ft). Along the way, we will see colorful mountains, small streams, and native vegetation including ichu grass and polylepis forests.
We will descend to Ananta Camp, situated at 4,700 m (15,420 ft). We will have lunch in a prepared dining area and spend the afternoon resting, exploring nearby trails, or taking photographs. In the evening, we will set up tents and enjoy dinner prepared at the camp. If the weather is clear, we will observe a bright, starry night typical of high Andean regions.

Distance: 12 km
Highest altitude: 5,000 m at Pucacocha Pass
Lowest altitude: 3,300 m at Alqatari start

Day 2Ananta – Warmi Saya Pass – Rainbow Mountain – Red Valley – Cusco

We will start early with coca tea or coffee served in our tent. We will enjoy an energetic breakfast to prepare for the day. Our group will begin the ascent toward Warmi Saya Pass, the highest point of the trek at 5,150 m (16,896 ft).
From the pass, we will descend to a circular lagoon and follow a trail along two smaller lagoons. We will continue until reaching Vinicunca, the famous Rainbow Mountain. There, we will explore the area, take photos, and our guide will explain the mountain’s unique geological formations.
After Rainbow Mountain, we will walk toward Red Valley, a quieter area with red-hued landscapes and open trails. The final descent will take approximately 2 hours (7 km / 4.3 mi). Once at the end, we will enjoy a hot lunch before boarding private transportation back to Cusco. We will arrive around 3:00 pm after approximately 3.5 hours (185 km / 115 mi) of driving.

Some climbs were no joke but the views up top made us forget about it fast. Lost count of how many photos we took.
