Each day will bring new discoveries along the Madre de Dios River and Tambopata River, where nature thrives in all its splendor. This experience will allow us to connect with the rhythm of the jungle and its incredible biodiversity.

We will travel by motorized boat ride through calm waters surrounded by lush greenery and towering trees. Our tour guide will share fascinating insights about the indigenous communities and their harmonious way of life. During our visit to Monkey Island, we will spot playful birds and monkeys leaping between the branches. Every moment will bring us closer to understanding the magic of the Amazon rainforest.

 Itinerary

Day 1Puerto Maldonado – Amazon Lodge – Jungle Walk – Night Safari

We will arrive in Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon. Our team will welcome us at the airport or bus terminal and transfer us to the lodge office for registration. We will then take a 40-minute (22 km) boat ride along the Madre de Dios River, surrounded by stunning tropical scenery.

At the Amazon Lodge, we will enjoy a refreshing local juice and a brief orientation by our tour guide. After lunch, we will begin a two-hour jungle walk through dense tropical rainforest trails. We will observe medicinal plants, giant trees over 600 years old, and fascinating wildlife such as birds, monkeys, and reptiles.

As the sun sets, we will explore the river again on a night safari in search of caimans, owls, capybaras, and other nocturnal creatures. We will finish the day with a delicious Amazonian dinner and rest to the soothing sounds of the jungle.

Day 2Amazon Lodge – Sandoval Lake – Giant River Otters – Night Walk

After breakfast, we will travel by boat to the entrance of Sandoval Lake, located within the Tambopata National Reserve. A 3 km hike through lush forest will lead us to the lake’s edge. We will board a small canoe to glide across calm waters reflecting the sky and trees.

At dawn and dusk, we may observe giant river otters, hoatzins, macaws, and many bird species along the shoreline. Our guide will explain the ecological importance of Sandoval Lake and its rich biodiversity.

In the evening, we will join a night walk to discover the mysterious side of the Amazon rainforest. We will hear the chorus of frogs, insects, and perhaps spot tarantulas, snakes, and glowing mushrooms under the dim light of our flashlights.

Day 3Lodge – Madre de Dios River – La Cachuela Clay Lick – Canopy Bridges

We will wake up early for a spectacular morning experience. Our boat ride upriver will last 50 minutes (25 km) to reach the La Cachuela Clay Lick. Here, hundreds of macaws, parrots, and parakeets will gather to feed on mineral-rich clay. We may also see sloths and toucans nearby.

After breakfast at the lodge, we will visit a local farm to learn about Amazonian crops such as cacao, coffee, and citrus fruits. We will taste exotic products and understand sustainable farming practices used by indigenous communities.

Later, we will explore the canopy walkway, suspended high among ancient trees. From above, we will admire toucans, hummingbirds, monkeys, and orchids. The panoramic views will give us a new perspective of the Tambopata Jungle.

Day 4 Lodge – Kayak to Monkey Island – Yacumama Lake – Piranha Fishing

We will start our day with a hearty breakfast before a thrilling kayak adventure on the Madre de Dios River. We will paddle near the riverbanks to observe turtles, white caimans, and colorful kingfishers. With luck, we may see a snake resting on tree branches.

Our next stop will be Monkey Island, home to several species of capuchins, squirrel monkeys, and howlers. Our guide will help us identify their calls and behavior.

In the afternoon, we will travel by land to Yacumama Lake, a tranquil haven surrounded by forest. Here, we will board a small raft to explore its peaceful waters and enjoy an unforgettable piranha fishing experience. We will take photos and then release the fish to protect the ecosystem.

Day 5 Lodge – Puerto Maldonado – Departure

After our final breakfast in the jungle, we will prepare for the return journey. We will navigate back along the Madre de Dios River toward Puerto Maldonado. Our staff will assist with transfers to the airport or bus terminal for onward travel.

We will carry with us the sounds, colors, and memories of our Tambopata Jungle Tours Peru, a journey filled with wildlife, adventure, and connection to nature.

Where does the Tambopata Jungle Tour begin and end?

The tour starts and ends in Puerto Maldonado, the gateway to the Peruvian Amazon. We will pick you up from the airport or bus terminal and transfer you to the Amazon Lodge by boat.

What is the best time to visit Tambopata?

The dry season, from May to October, offers the best conditions for wildlife viewing and comfortable hiking. However, the rainy season (November to April) brings lush vegetation, active wildlife, and fewer visitors. Both seasons offer incredible experiences.

How difficult are the jungle walks?

Most walks are easy to moderate and suitable for travelers with basic fitness levels. Trails are flat but can be muddy after rain. Our tour guide will adjust the pace based on the group’s ability.

What type of accommodation is included?

We will stay in eco-lodges and private jungle bungalows equipped with private bathrooms, showers, and mosquito nets. If preferred, camping with tents and mats is also available upon request.

Are there mosquitoes or insects in the jungle?

Yes. The Amazon rainforest is home to many insects, especially near rivers and lakes. We recommend bringing insect repellent with 60% DEET, long-sleeved clothing, and light socks for protection.

Is electricity available at the lodge?

Electricity is available at certain hours of the day, usually in the evening, to charge cameras, phones, and flashlights. Lodges use solar panels or generators to minimize environmental impact.

What kind of food will we have during the tour?

Our professional cook will prepare freshly made Amazonian and Peruvian dishes using local ingredients. Vegetarian or special meal options are available upon prior request.

Are vaccinations required for Tambopata?

We recommend vaccinations for yellow fever and tetanus before visiting the Amazon region. Consult your doctor at least two weeks before your trip.

What wildlife can we expect to see?

We may observe macaws, parrots, monkeys, caimans, capybaras, giant river otters, and a wide variety of bird species. Wildlife sightings depend on weather and time of day, but our guides will maximize opportunities.

Can families or children join the tour?

Yes. The Tambopata Jungle Tours Peru 5D/4N is perfect for families and children who enjoy nature and outdoor activities. Our guides will ensure a safe and educational experience for everyone.

This was my first time in the Amazon, and Tambopata was the perfect introduction. The 5D/4N tour gave us enough time to really explore the jungle. We learned about medicinal plants, spotted many animals, and experienced beautiful sunrises and sunsets over the river.
