Early departure from Cusco begins the approximately 10-hour journey across the Andes. The route climbs to 4,000 meters above sea level, passing traditional Quechua communities and striking landscapes. Key stops include the pre-Inca cemetery at Ninamarca and the picturesque town of Paucartambo (2,900 meters above sea level).
The ascent continues to Abra Acjanaco, the official entrance to Manu National Park. From there, the descent enters the Cloud Forest, full of bromeliads, ferns, orchids, and abundant wildlife. Birds such as the Andean Cock-of-the-Rock, quetzals, and trogons may appear. Capuchin monkeys and woolly monkeys could also be seen.
The road passes Pillcopata (527 meters above sea level) and reaches Puerto de Atalaya for a riverboat ride on the Alto Madre de Dios. Lunch on board precedes arrival at Dorado Lodge. Afternoon trails lead to a mammal clay lick platform. Night walks reveal nocturnal wildlife.
Day 1 Statistics:
Morning navigation heads toward Salvador Lake via authorized catamaran from the Limonal ranger station. Observations may include giant river otters, one of Manu’s emblematic species. Trails around the area showcase virgin rainforest, rich in flora and fauna.
Return to Casa Matsiguenka (370 meters above sea level) for lunch. Afternoon activities allow cultural interaction with the Matsiguenka community, learning local crafts and traditions. Evening nocturnal walks reveal amphibians, insects, nocturnal birds, and active mammals.
Day 2 Statistics:
Early breakfast precedes a four-hour boat ride upriver toward Limonal ranger station. The journey highlights the Amazon’s dense forest and abundant wildlife.
Continue upriver for 1.5 hours to the Diamante indigenous community. Visits introduce local customs, traditions, and sustainable Amazon lifestyles. The journey resumes for another 1.5 hours, arriving at Dorado Lodge. Lunch on board features riverside scenery and wildlife observation.
Afternoon exploration of nearby trails allows wildlife spotting, followed by dinner and optional night walks. The lodge surroundings provide opportunities to observe nocturnal rainforest activity.
Day 3 Statistics:
Breakfast on board accompanies a five-hour river journey to Salvador Lake. Wildlife viewing includes macaws, herons, spoonbills, capybaras, caimans, turtles, monkeys, and occasionally wild cats along the riverbanks. Afternoon trails explore pristine jungle ecosystems. Observation tower at Otorongo Lake provides panoramic views of the canopy and lake.
Return to Casa Matsiguenka for the second night. Evening walks reveal nocturnal rainforest activity and animal behavior.
Day 4 Statistics:
Morning visit to a parrot and macaw clay lick for dawn wildlife activity. Colorful species feed on mineral-rich walls while observation platforms allow safe viewing.
After breakfast, river navigation continues upriver with a stop at Shintuya hot springs. Relaxation and optional bathing in mineral waters provide rejuvenation. The journey proceeds to Puerto de Atalaya for land transfer. Ascend toward Bamboo Lodge in the Cloud Forest.
Afternoon trails reveal cloud forest biodiversity. Guides interpret local flora and fauna. Dinner at the lodge concludes the day.
Day 5 Statistics:
Journey takes approximately 9 hours (excluding stops for lunch or restroom breaks), crossing the Andes and diverse landscapes. Stop for lunch in Paucartambo (3,024 meters above sea level) before final ascent to Cusco. Arrival in the late afternoon concludes this immersive Manu National Park adventure.
Day 6 Statistics:
The tour begins early in Cusco at approximately 5:30–6:00 AM.
